Why I Run

| June 5, 2013 | 4 Comments

In honor of National Running Day (06-05-2013) I’d thought I would write a little on why I run. Last Sunday I finished my second 1/2 marathon in San Diego. I finished 16 minutes faster than my first race last December, 2:13:52!!! To be honest, the last 3 miles almost killed me. Luckily my running partner, Paul kept up the pep talks and kept me going. I think my favorite comment was ,“Vinny (my nickname) you better not get caught walking, you don’t know where your boyfriend is to take pictures, we can’t have a picture of you walking!”

So close to the finish line!!

So close to the finish line!!

We finally made it!

Not my entire world revolves around design and work. I do have to get in a little escape every day. Some people read, play video games, watch movies, mine is running. Something I never thought I would say in my lifetime, but I love running. It is also a great therapy!

Last August I was talked into the crazy idea of running a half marathon… Who knew that would create a monster! The first day was hard, the second day I was dry heaving in the bushes, and by the end of the week I could barely walk, (I needed the handicap bar at work to use the restroom!) for whatever reason I kept going, and making up swear words! There was a lot of pain in this process. When I crossed that finish line, I was on the biggest high. I just ran 13.1 miles by choice!? Am I absolutely, freaking INSANE?? If you know me, the answer is absolutely!!! On 12/12/12 I signed up for 2 more races… Oh holy crap, this can’t be real! San Diego or BUST!!!

Almost 3 months after my first ½ marathon, I am still going. I have run through blood (literally), sweat, and tears. Yes, tears, some days I could barely sit in my desk chair. I first started running to survive my half marathon, now I run as an escape, my ‘me’ time. For that run, my world is my running shoes hitting the pavement. For that run my deadlines have melted away, emails don’t exist, worries about work and the future just don’t matter anymore. When all things seem uncertain, I can always count on me, my running shoes, and the pavement being perfectly synced. When I come home from a long run, I feel like I can conquer anything.

Many of you will really think I am crazy when I say, part of me actually enjoys getting up at 5:00am to run. Don’t get me wrong, I make up some new swear words when the alarm goes off. But, once I roll my bum out of bed, strap on the shoes and make my way outside, it all makes sense. There is just something about being outside before many people are up starting their day. And then coming around the corner and seeing the view of the valley makes everything fall into place for just a little while. At the end of every day I sleep like a baby.

Though I am a little sore from the most recent race, it won’t be long before I willingly get up at 5am to go running again. The big question… do the Alien Run at Area 51 in Las Vegas or not???

In honor of National Running Day, why do you run??

About the Author ()

I have been in the landscape architecture industry since 2006. I have known since I was 15, visiting Boston that I wanted to be in the design industry. My passion is design, design that somehow makes a difference in someone's life. The greatest achievement is seeing a child's eyes light up over the new park or garden you helped design for them! My other passion is photography, I am no where near a professional level, but it's a good excuse to go hiking!

Denci, you are awesome! Thank you for always being there for me through this very interesting journey I have found myself in. Might be running another 1/2 in April at the Speedway. They are giving away a brand new mustang… if I win I’ll split custody of the mustang with you!
